VSF Explorer 36mm vs 40mm — The Quietest DD3230 Watch Worth Owning

The Explorer Is the Quietest Watch VSF Makes

Three Explorer QC posts landed on RepTimeQC in one sweep — a 36mm, a 40mm, and a 224270. That’s more than I’d expect for a reference nobody writes about.

It’s an easy watch to overlook. Fixed bezel, no date, no complications, black dial with 3-6-9 numerals. Nothing announces itself.

That’s exactly why it’s worth a second look.

And it’s also why it runs a movement most people have never heard of.

First, the reference map — this trips people up constantly. Genuine Explorer I comes in three sizes across four generations:

Here’s the thing — no factory builds all three sizes. VSF does 36mm and 40mm. Clean did 36mm and 39mm.

So if you specifically want the 39mm, you’re shopping a factory that no longer exists — which means no parts pipeline. The 39mm is effectively off the table for a new purchase.

DD3230 — Why a No-Date Watch Needs Its Own Movement

This is the part of the Explorer that’s genuinely interesting, and it applies to a whole family of watches.

Most replica movements carry a date mechanism, because most watches have dates. Fit one of those to a no-date watch and pulling the crown gives you a first stop that does nothing — an empty position where the date quickset would be. It’s a small thing that reads wrong every single time you set the watch.

The DD3230 exists to kill it.

It’s the Dandong 3235 with the date-control position removed — not a new movement, a purpose-cut variant. Pull the crown and you land straight on time-setting. One stop, no dead position, matching genuine.

Specs come across from the 3235 unchanged: 70-hour power reserve, integrated construction, Dandong finishing. Hand-wind takes about forty to fifty turns from stopped. The rotor rides on 27 ball bearings, the bridge carries ROLEX text and the caliber number with fish-scale and brushed finishing, and the balance uses a regulator index.

VSF puts the DD3230 in every no-date Rolex they build: Submariner 124060, Explorer 36mm and 40mm, Oyster Perpetual 36 and 41, and the Air-King. Buy any of them and you’re buying the same movement — which is worth knowing, because the Explorer is usually the cheapest way into it.

36 or 40 — the Numbers, Then the Wrist

VSF’s 36mm 124270 got a revision that fixed the bracelet dimensions, and the current measurements are tight:

Read that weight line carefully. The replica figure includes every protective film and the genuine figure has none. Strip the films and the real gap is 1–3 grams.

On a steel watch with no precious metal to account for, that’s as close as this gets.

Early VSF 36mm units shipped with an over-wide bracelet. That’s been corrected. If you’re buying secondhand, the bracelet width is worth checking against the numbers above.

Sizing: 36mm suits wrists up to about 16.5cm, and works up to 17cm if you like a smaller watch. Above 17cm, go 40mm.

The Explorer wears its size honestly — no oversized bezel or crown guards inflating the footprint — so the number on paper is roughly what lands on your wrist.

Both run the DD3230 at 70 hours. The 40mm carries the small crown mark below six o’clock. Cases are solid-back on both — no display version, so the movement is a spec you take on trust rather than something you’ll ever look at.

Verifying You Got a Dandong and Not a Shanghai

The single most useful skill on this watch. Externally the factories are hard to separate, and the movement is where the money went.

Regulator position. Dandong puts the regulator index above the balance. Shanghai’s sits differently. This is the primary tell.

But don’t stop at “two studs.” Some Shanghai 3235 units also have two studs — oriented opposite to Dandong’s. Counting studs proves nothing; you need to read the orientation.

Engraving. Shanghai movements carry stamped marking that Dandong doesn’t. Dandong’s engraving is deeper and cleaner, with better chamfering, brushing and polishing. Shanghai’s reads shallow and comparatively rough.

The clutch wheel. On a Dandong 3230 or 3235 the internal clutch component has a polished face — it looks like a tiny mirror. Distinctive once you’ve seen it.

Power reserve as a cross-check. Dandong runs 70 hours. Shanghai’s 3230 originally managed only about 40. Clean later moved their regulator to the upper position matching Dandong and got Shanghai up to roughly 60 — and a lot of people took that relocation as proof they’d switched to Dandong movements. They hadn’t. Same Shanghai movement, repositioned regulator, still short of 70 hours.

Not even close.

One more thing worth knowing: smaller operations rework unidentified movements and sell them as 3230s. If the seller can’t say where the movement came from, assume the worst. I’ve covered the wider Dandong lineup in my Dandong movements guide.

One myth to retire: bearing count. Some Air-King batches ship with 7 ball bearings instead of 27, and it doesn’t matter in use. If the winding train is dry or worn, 127 bearings wouldn’t save it.

Rolex specified 27 in the genuine 3235 because that movement needs very high winding efficiency to avoid stopping — early 3235s did stall, from mainspring tension weakening. It’s a fix for a specific genuine problem, not a general quality metric.

Four Things People Wrongly Call Fake

The Explorer generates more false accusations than most references. Several correct details just happen to look wrong.

Hand edges aren’t rounded — and shouldn’t be. On Datejust and GMT, hand edges get a rounded polish. On Explorer I they don’t, and genuine doesn’t either. A reader emailed me last month convinced his 124270 was a fake because the hands looked flat next to his DJ. Sent him a genuine Explorer macro shot. He apologised the same day.

The crown under the triangle sits slightly off-centre. Genuine does this too — not every genuine Explorer has it perfectly square. Slight left or right lean is within normal.

The crystal goes slightly hazy at certain angles. Genuine does this as well. Straight on it’s clear; off-axis you get a whitish cast. Normal.

The clasp has a visible gap in the middle. That’s the correct design — it isn’t supposed to close flush. Explorer uses the Rolex safety clasp, not the Datejust-style easy-open one.

Two things that are real tells, though. The bezel cross-section must be brushed. Genuine brushes that ring; if yours came polished, it’s wrong.

And check the dial for assembly debris — tweezer marks on the hands and dust under the crystal do slip through QC on this model. It’s a gloss black dial, so it shows dust readily. That’s a characteristic rather than a defect.

Don’t authenticate by clasp code. VSF’s Explorer clasp code has run U7T, then TR11, then TL11, and the inner ring code changes too. Factories rotate these without announcement and rival factories copy them.

Codes tell you roughly which production run you have. Nothing about authenticity.

Explorer I, Air-King, Explorer II — Don’t Buy the Wrong One

Three watches that get confused in listings. Only one of them I’d recommend right now.

Air-King looks close to the Explorer at a glance and runs the same DD3230 in 904L steel. Differences: the seconds hand and ROLEX text are green, the crown mark is pale yellow, and the dial is all Arabic numerals.

One thing buyers get wrong constantly — only the 12 marker, the 3/6/9 and the hands are lumed. The 05/10/20 markers are not. People assume they are and think theirs is faulty. I’ve had two DMs this year alone from readers convinced VSF botched the lume application.

VSF against Clean on the Air-King comes down almost entirely to the movement, since Clean used Shanghai. Externally they’re near-inseparable; the 904L weight difference is three or four grams.

Explorer II is a different watch — bigger, 24-hour hand, GMT movement — and the honest assessment is that nobody makes a really good one.

Clean’s version hit a parts supply problem that dragged on for months with repeated missed delivery promises. JVS runs a Jinghe 3285, which is a third independent movement source distinct from both Shanghai and Dandong, and it’s currently the best of a weak field. ARF builds one on the 3285 in white and black as a Clean substitute.

If you want Explorer II, buy with the understanding that the category hasn’t been solved.

Explorer I is the one that’s sorted. Dimensions match, weight is within a couple of grams, and the movement is the best clone in the segment with no dead crown position.

It’s the least dramatic watch VSF makes and one of the most correct.

Whichever way you go, ask the seller for a caseback photo showing the regulator position before you pay. It’s the one check that separates a 70-hour Dandong from a 60-hour Shanghai, and no clasp code will tell you.
